New Caledonia (French: Nouvelle-Caledonie), located near the Tropic of Cancer, located in the South Pacific Ocean, is located about 1,500 km east of Brisbane, Australia. Area: 18,575 square kilometers. Among them, New Caledonia Island is 16,372 square kilometers, and the Loyalty Islands are 1,981 square kilometers. Population: 204,000 (June 1998 census).
The earliest residents were from Papua and the Polynesian Islands. It was discovered in 1774. In 1843, the British sent commissioners to the island. It became a French colony in 1853 and later merged with Tahiti. In 1884, the seat was in 1940. It became a French overseas territory in 1946. In December 1976, the government committee was established, which had partial autonomy to handle internal affairs.
